Forever Carlyle defends her family's holdings through deception and force as their protector, their Lazarus. Shot dead defending the family home, Forever's day goes downhill from there.
Lazarus #1 eBook Greg Rucka Michael Lark
I purchased Volume One on the recommendation of some Bookstagram friends. I read one page, ran to Amazon, and purchased Volume Two and Three. Then I read all three in one sitting, then went out and bought Volume Four and Five. With a intriguing mixture of power, strength, and vulnerability, Forever Carlyle defends her family with a single-minded devotion. But she can’t ignore the mystery of her origins, or the tangled struggle for power both inside her family and between her family and the others that rule the world.
Gritty art, realistic color, and deft design bring to life a grim world, with complex characters and rules. We follow not just Forever, but her siblings, her serfs, her rivals, her lover, and the Waste as they struggle to survive. People die. People suffer. People are cruel and mean and they lie. And they love. Forever, for all her strength, is still young of mind, almost naive. The plot concerns her exploration of the world and her place (coming of age) as she faces dangers both inside and outside her family. The writers don’t shy away from dark topics and this gives the story a riveting tension.
If you enjoy stories with strong female characters, twisting plots, dark and dynamic art, gritty world-building, and blood, then this is the story for you.

Lazarus #1 eBook Greg Rucka Michael Lark Reviews
Rucka writes a concise, well thought out story with excellent development and pacing. The art work can be a little inconsistent with finer details and close ups. But all in all, I'm on vol. 3 and want so much more!
One of the best graphic sci-fi spionage and conspirancy novel around there today. The characters are very well builded and Rucka has really done the novel he wants. This is not a novel for young boys, maybe will be boring for them.
This is a great series by a team that I otherwise would overlook. The story has a Transmetropolitan type feel mixed with an almost terminator type story line. The art is fantastic. My tastes tend to be on the cleaner side when it comes to comic book art and Lazarus delivers with just enough of an abstract aesthetic. This book is a winner. I've given a copy of the trade to the wife as a way of getting her into Comic books.
Rucka has been putting out books with strong female characters in them ever since Whiteout, Vol. 1, Definitive Edition, Queen & Country, etc. Here though in Lazarus he has a protagonist that is probably the biggest killing machine he has written, but she is mentally much younger and to a certain degree still coming of age.
I won't get too much into plotlines that have already been adequately reviewed. The setting is sci-fi, set in in a future United States/Mexico in the aftermath of an unknown (to the reader) ecological or wartime disaster that has taken place. New nation-states have been created, reminiscent of the Tim Sale run on Grendel Grendel Devil's Reign (Grendel (Graphic Novels)), battling over scarce resources.
Some of the other reviews fault the plot development of the series, feeling it is too slow. I found just the opposite, with good pacing setting the book up as a true "novel". Rucka's writing is strong enough that you don't need a lot to happen in each issue, and there is no reason to rush when you can stop and smell both the dialogue and artistic roses along the way.
While Lark's artwork lines may be a little too "scratchy" for some, the book has a good overall look to it, and he is dead on with facial expressions and other nuances that compliment Rucka's writing beautifully. Can't wait to see it unfold, 4 1/2 stars, an easy pick-up at this price.
I'll admit, I bought this story because (1) it was cheap ($6.31 at the time) and (2) OMG THE ART. The art is absolutely kinetic and riveting, even when all the characters are doing is sitting around and talking. The story follows a genetically-enhanced young woman who is the enforcer for her mob family. A plot develops revolving around an internal struggle and a conflict with another mob family, and mayhem predictably ensues. The main story is standard fare. Really it's the character interactions among the various family members that make it interesting. By the time it's done, you come to understand just how put-upon and underappreciated the main character is, and you want to know whether she's going to continue in that mode. Only four stars for the only decent story, but this is a good book worth reading.
I was amazed at how good the book is and yet it is not very well known. My girlfriend got it for me as a birthday present. It took me a while before I finally picked it up and read it. The story arc is pretty original and the art is great. There is a lot of violence from what I remember (read it a couple of months back so my memory is not fresh). Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for some action comic other than superheroes.
