Willard wants to write a novel, but he doesn't have any ideas, until he meets Robert on the strand at Venice Beach. Robert offers Willard a story, a story about which he swears every word is true, but there are some complications that come with it. Robert appears to be harmless enough, but he seems frightening at the same time. He coaxes Willard onto the beach to tell his story, and in the telling of the story Willard begins to question Robert's sanity, and his own safety. No ordinary man could do the things Robert claims. He's just too old. And no ordinary women could do the things Robert claims Berta and Lores can do. What really offends Willard is Robert's observation that his timid nature is exactly what Robert needs to hear his story. Timid? What an insult. No one has ever told Willard he was timid, and Willard ceertainly doesn't see himself as timid. And what's worse is Robert's claim that Willard must tell the end of the story for the outcome to have the desired effect Robert needs. Robert is in love and he must have Willard's end of the story for him to have the woman he loves. There's simply no other way about it. How can every word of Robert's story be true if Willard makes up the ending?

This story simply has it all: action, excitement, humour, emotions, history, thoughtfulness - and all written in grand storytelling and with excellent style.It is the 2nd book I read from this author - "Robin of Tudor Gables" was the 1st one. After this read I had relatively high expectations to the author, for as a reader I was already spoiled by 1st class writing. And my expectations got even surpassed - page per page!
The story focusses primarily on the resolution of a murder, perpetrated a long time ago and never atoned. This murder is in turn intertwined with mysterious groups chasing each other for centuries. There is also a love story in a very unusual style, told with great sensitivity and humorously described. In addition the friendship of former high school graduates, former rowdies and daredevils. Most of this club are now respectable members of society. The protagonists, however - thanks to their high skills - operate in perilous missions to which they even have fun!
And all is told from two perspectives, which is basically not uncommon, BUT here are two first-person perspectives! The author has mastered this premier class with flying colors. Short dialogues and longer narrative phases are involved with eloquence.
The reader begins (at least to me it was so) to delve into the book and experience the story as a movie behind his eyes. And after I came out of Harlan's Cinema I would bet that the class of this book has the potential to a longseller.
